A FIRST Robotics team might start a podcast to share knowledge, showcase achievements, and engage a broader community. It offers a platform to share experiences, tips, and educational content on robotics, programming, and STEM careers. A podcast can help build team visibility, attract sponsors and mentors, and develop communication skills among members. It also serves as a motivational tool, highlighting success stories and inspiring others in the robotics community. Overall, a podcast fosters collaboration, learning, and outreach, strengthening the team’s presence and impact, so this post tells you how to make one, and things you should consider.
Step 1: Identify your topic and Niche
Try to answer the questions:
What are you going to be talking about?
What is your topic? (Ex: Food)
What is your Niche? (Ex: Food Education)
The more specific you are, the easier it will be to hit a specific demographic of people who share the same interest as you
Know your target audience: Define who you want to reach—students, mentors, or the general public interested in STEM
Content: Plan a mix of topics such as team insights, STEM education, interviews with mentors and alumni, competition recaps, and discussions on robotics trends
Engagement: Keep your content educational and entertaining to maintain listener interest.
Step 2: Finalize your Podcast Name and Distribution
Choose a Podcast Name: Pick something catchy and relevant to your team or mission, incorporating your team’s name for recognition.
Create Podcast Artwork: Use tools like Canva or hire a designer on Fiverr to create eye-catching artwork that reflects your team’s personality.
Distribute Your Podcast: Use platforms like Transistor, BuzzSprout, or Podcastle to distribute your podcast to popular platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, and Google Podcasts.
Step 3: Plan and Record Episodes
Episode Structure: Organize episodes with a consistent format—intro, main content, and outro.
Interview Guests: Bring in team members, mentors, and alumni to share unique perspectives, and consider reaching out to professionals in STEM fields.
Recording Environment: Ensure good audio quality by recording in a quiet space with a decent microphone. Consider using a podcast recording tool like Audacity or GarageBand.
Step 4: Simple Editing
Keep it Simple: Don’t over-edit; maintain a conversational tone and natural flow.
Add Hooks: Create a 10-30 second hook at the start of each episode to grab attention.
Remove Interruptions: Edit out long pauses, background noise, or mistakes to improve overall quality without making it sound too polished.
Step 5: Publish & Promote
Publish: Once edited, upload episodes to your distribution platform and consider also uploading video versions on YouTube.
Promote: Share short clips on social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts to attract more listeners. Invite guests with their own following to help expand your reach—using “OPA” (Other People’s Audiences).
Additional things you may want to look into are:
Review listener stats (like retention and watch time) and comments to get feedback an identify what works and what doesn’t.
Iterate: Continuously improve your content, tech setup, and episode format based on feedback and personal observation to make each episode better than the last.
By staying consistent, engaging with your audience, and iterating over time, your podcast can become a valuable resource for anyone interested in robotics and STEM, while building a community around your team’s efforts in FIRST Robotics.
